What is Kandersteg International Scout Centre (KISC)?
Information about KISC.
In 1907 Scouting was founded and in the next 15 years it grew very quickly so that there were soon Scouts all over the world. In 1920, the first World Scout Jamboree took place in London and it was such a great success that Lord Baden-Powell expressed his wish of a permanent international meeting place where Scouts from all over the world could come together. In 1921, the Chief Scout of Switzerland , Walter von Bonstetten, was visiting Kandersteg on holiday and he found an old empty chalet. It had been built in 1908, when the Lötschberg railway tunnel was built through the mountains and, in 1913 when the tunnel had been finished, it had been left by the railway company. Around it were many other signs of the railway building, including other accommodation and the power station. Von Bonstetten felt that the place could be the meeting place that Baden-Powell had dreamed about and wrote to him to let him know. The response was positive and in February 1923 the "Scouts International Home" Association was set up; on 12 April 1923 the chalet and some land was bought and the Centre came into existence. It cost SFr. 15,100 (just over £6000). This is how the Centre began; now, more than 80 years later, Scouts from Chapelhall have the chance to go and visit Kandersteg and live Baden-Powell’s Dream.
Where will Scouts sleep?
Camping or indoors.
KISC has five buildings that offer accommodation over and above the popular camping ground. Whilst our Troop keep the outin Scouting, when it comes to visiting KISC we always sleep indoors. The Old Chalet would be our preferred option for 2011. The Old Chalet sleeps 175 people in 23 rooms. These rooms vary from 2 bed to 22 bed rooms. On our last trip we had a room for 8 (girls), a room for 16 (boys), and rooms for 2 and 6 for the adults. The Old Chalet houses the dinning room, computer suite, shop, and an activity hall. How are the Scouts getting there?
We are planning to fly from Edinburgh Airport to Geneva with EasyJet. From Geneva we will be travelling by coach to Kandersteg. Our return journey will be the reverse of the above. Obviously we are dependent upon EasyJet fares and timetabling and exact departure plans will be circulated when finalized.
